School Bus Safety- The Danger Zone
- Stay out of the DANGER ZONE at all times
- If you can touch the bus, you are too close!
- If you drop something in the DANGER ZONE leave it, NEVER stop and pick it up
Ask the driver to retrieve it! - Always aproach the bus from the front, if you can see the driver the driver can see you.
Most importantly, if you can't see the driver, the driver can't see you!
Waiting for the bus at the bus stop
- Always be at the bus stop 5 minutes before the bus arrives-Never run to or from the bus
- Have all your belongings in your book bag
- Tuck in drawstrings on jackets, coats & mittens, so they do not get snagged on the handrail
- Stay on the sidewalk or side of the road, no horseplay!
Boarding the bus
- WAIT! on the sidewalk or side of the road until the bus comes to a complete stop & the door opens before approaching the bus
- If you have to cross the street WAIT! until the driver gives the universal crossing signal indicating that it is safe to cross
- When boarding enter one at a time, use the handrail, no pushing or shoving
- Find your seat and sit facing the driver, with your feet in front of you
- Keep the aisle clear at all times
Riding the bus
- Students should observe the same conduct as in the classroom
- Be courteous, use no bad language
- Do not eat or drink on the bus
- Keep the bus clean- use the trash can
- Stay in your seat, sit facing the front, with your feet in front of you
- Do not block the aisle-the driver has to see out of the back window!
- Keep your hands, head and feet inside the bus
Getting off of the bus
- Remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop
- Have all your belongings in your book bag
- Tuck in drawstrings on jackets, coats & mittens, so they do not get snagged on the handrail
- Do not push or shove
- Use the handrail
- Look in both direections before stepping off
- Walk, do not run away from the bus
- If you have to cross the street
- Walk to the front of the bus by taking ten steps and turn and face the driver and say "I see the driver and the driver see's me".
- Wait until the driver gives the universal crossing signal indicating that it is safe to cross
- Stop at the front of the bus and look in both directions, if the bus driver beeps the horn, it means DANGER! return to the curb
